FAQs

Colon cleansing

Colon cleansing also known as Colonic Irrigation & Colon Hydrotherapy in Welwyn

How should I prepare for a treatment?
Please arrive at least 5 minutes prior to your appointment time. This will allow you to relax beforehand and visit the bathroom if necessary. We also advise that you do not consume any food 2 hours prior to receiving Colon Hydrotherapy.

How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments needed varies from client to client depending on their personal goals and indeed their reasons for having colon hydrotherapy. A client may simply want one treatment, followed up by regular maintenance treatments once a month. Typically though, a larger number of clients new to colon hydrotherapy will embark on a course of several sessions to see a considerable improvement in the health of their colon. This is because the colon is often full of gas and stubborn faecal matter that may be resistant to dislodging in the first session.

If the client is looking to kick-start a healthier lifestyle and see vast improvements in problems such as constipation, it is recommended that a course of 6 to 8 treatments within a short period of time (1 or 2 treatments a week) can provide great benefits and relief from problematic symptoms. The therapist will discuss your requirements and outcomes during your initial consultation.

Do the treatments Hurt?
No. In fact with the state-of-the-art equipment used and the advanced training of the therapists at Hertfordshire Colonics, clients find their colon hydrotherapy treatments are revitalising and pleasant.

Colon hydrotherapy, an effective method for cleansing the large intestine, has been utilised for centuries as an adjunct to proper exercise, plenty of water, nutrition and personal hygiene.

How does a colon hydrotherapy treatment compare to an enema?
'An enema only reaches the rectum and lower part of the colon, whereas with colon hydrotherapy, the entire length of the colon (the large intestinal tract approximately 5 to 5½ feet in length) is reached. Colon hydrotherapy is many more times effective. According to learned centenarian Dr. Norman Walker, "One colon irrigation is equivalent to 30 enemas." '- Taken from the Colon Therapists Network.

Will I experience any intestinal discomfort or fatigue after the cleansing?
Usually not, but as the cleansing will stir up a lot of old debris and toxins, you might experience some minor nausea or fatigue. If any discomfort occurs, it is recommended to rest and apply a warm heating pad to the abdomen. If you wish, a mild vegetable broth or peppermint tea is usually soothing at this time. Any discomfort will usually pass within 24 hours.

How long does the actual treatment time take?
The first session will take longer than the follow up sessions as it will involve a consultation. Plan about and hour to an hour and a half for the first session. The actual recommended time on colon hydrotherapy equipment is between 30 and 45 minutes.

After the first session allow an hour from arrival to departure. Is it safe?
Yes. All our staff are fully trained and certified and we only use state-of-the-art equipment. The water is introduced at a low gravitational pressure and is constantly monitored, so there is no danger of bowel perforation. All equipment is pre-sterilised and disposable. Surrounding areas are disinfected using hospital approved disinfecting solutions, which kill all viruses, bacteria and fungi. Colon hydrotherapy, unlike the use of laxatives, is not habit forming and actually improves the tone of the colon.

How discreet is the treatment?
Your modesty is preserved at all times. During the treatment itself you will be fully covered, using a gown, and a blanket will be placed over you to maintain your dignity. All medical details obtained from the consultation are strictly confidential.

How much of the intestines are actually cleansed during a colon hydrotherapy treatment?
During a treatment it is possible for a professional colon therapist to cleanse the full length of the colon (large intestine). The small intestine are not specifically involved in colon hydrotherapy treatment.

Should I see my doctor before my first colon hydrotherapy session?
If you believe you have any medical conditions or health concerns then it is always a good idea to consult your GP before embarking on a course of colon hydrotherapy. Typically a medical examination is not required. Colon hydrotherapy is a safe and relaxing treatment and at Hertfordshire Colonics we only use state-of-the-art equipment professionally administered by a certified colon therapist.

Does colon hydrotherapy remove friendly intestinal flora from the colon?
Cleansing the colon through colon hydrotherapy will help to bring the acid or alkaline ratio back into balance, allowing friendly bacteria to thrive, while inhibiting disease causing organisms. A client may further maintain this balance by taking acidophilus or other probiotic supplements which may be recommended to each client after their treatment.

Does having a menstrual period at the time of a colon hydrotherapy session have any effect on the treatment?
No, in fact it is usually a good time to receive colon hydrotherapy since your body is already cleansing and the treatment may help relieve cramping associated with menstruation. Your menstrual flow will not interfere with the success of the treatment. Flushing the colon can also reduce abdominal pressure associated with menstrual cycles. All we ask is that you remove your tampon before the treatment starts.
