Vitamin C

What is vitamin C?

•       Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, it is a vitamin found in various foods and cannot be made by the human body so is an essential part of the               diet.

Vitamin C

•       Also known as ascorbic acid, has several important functions.

•       helping to protect cells and keeps them healthy

•       Anti Oxidant Support

•       maintaining healthy skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage

•       Support normal skin function including collagen

•       helping with wound healing

•       Supports the immune system

•       Lack of vitamin C can lead to scurvy. Mild deficiencies may occur in people with poor or very restricted diets.

How Does Vitamin C Work?

•      Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is essential for the synthesis of collagen and glycosaminoglycans which are the building materials of all connective tissues,            such as skin, blood vessels, tendons, joint cartilage and bone.

•      Vitamin C is essential for normal wound healing and normal capillary function.

•      It may have regenerative effects on skin wrinkles, texture, strength, and evenness of tone, allegedly due to its properties as an antioxidant.

•      Vitamin C utilization is affected during conditions of physiological stress, such as trauma or infection.

•      Vitamin C is also needed for the absorption of iron from food.

Recommended Amount of Vitamin C

•       Adults aged 19 to 64 need 40mg of vitamin C a day.

•       Smokers need more

•       You should be able to get all the vitamin C you need from your daily diet but unfortunately most people in the UK don’t.

•       Vitamin C can't be stored in the body, so you need it in your diet every day.

What is vitamin C Deficiency?

•          Deficiency, or a lack, of vitamin C in your body happens because of a lack of sufficient amounts of vitamin C in your diet.

•          A lack of vitamin C means that new collagen cannot be formed.

•          Various tissues in your body to start to break down and the health and repair of your body become affected

•          Can lead to an illness known as scurvy.

What are the symptoms of vitamin c deficiency?

•          The first symptoms of vitamin C deficiency tend to be:

•          Tiredness and weakness.

•          Muscle and joint pains.

•          Easy bruising

•          Gum diseases

•          Easy bleeding

•          Myalgia due to carnitine production

•          Roughness of the skin

•          Poor wound healing

•          Spots that look like tiny, red-blue bruises on your skin (petichiae)

How common is vitamin C deficiency?

•          Scurvy due to vitamin C deficiency is rare in the UK.

•          People dependent on drugs and/or alcohol

•          People who do not have a healthy, balanced diet.

•          People who go on very restrictive diets or with eating disorders

•          People living on a low income who tend not to buy foods with a high vitamin C content.

•          People with a medical condition that affects the body's ability to digest and absorb food, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

•          Older people who may eat a less varied diet.

•          Smokers. Smoking affects the absorption of vitamin C from foods and also vitamin C is used up in the body more quickly in those who smoke.

•          Pregnant and breastfeeding women because they need higher amounts of vitamin C although pregnancy and breastfeeding is a contra indication              to carrying out the treatment. This must be tested and controlled medically.

            Contraindications

•          Allergic to ascorbic acid or any other ingredient found in the supplement (need to be aware of anaphylaxis)

•          History of hyperoxaluria (acid in the urine)`

Vitamin C can make your urine more acidic. In some cases this can change how your body gets rid of certain medications which in turn can change the levels of some medications in your body and can result in decreased effectiveness or increased side effects.

Such as:

•       Fluphenazine (proloxin)

•       Magnesium salicylate (novasal)

•          Feeling faint

•          High doses of vitamin C increase the risk of a rare condition known as hyperoxaluria.

•          Hyperoxaluria is a serious health problem in which too much oxalic acid is excreted in the urine, increasing your risk of kidney stones.

•          The Symptoms of Anaphylaxis

•          Any or all of the following symptoms may be present during an anaphylaxis reaction:
